Tips & Trends
People often ask us about the most common decorating mistakes. From our perspective, these design faux pas generally fall into three categories—trying to be too trendy, personalization or lack thereof, and having too much stuff. All of these can interfere with the day to day enjoyment of your home and become significant road blocks to selling when you are ready.
For example, the trend over the last few years to place a sink bowl on the counter top in bathrooms and powder rooms is already starting to look dated. So is the idea of having two or three different wood types or finishes on your kitchen cabinets. While it looks interesting now, we are afraid it is quickly going to look too trendy. Choose one finish you really like and use it throughout. We think white kitchens always look fresh and never go out of style.
We love to use paint and wallpaper to personalize and liven up a space, but recently we saw a room that had gone overboard —a huge wall sized cartoonish mural in a living/dining area. Clearly this is something that may not appeal to everyone and could be difficult to undo when the time comes to try to redecorate or sell. It also seemed a bit too distracting to good digestion in an eating/ relaxing space!
Finally, too much clutter --no matter how cherished the objects --winds up being hard to clean, can overwhelm the senses, and from a feng shui perspective, can zap positive energy. A few well chosen objects can really enhance a room. A few too many can certainly detract. Edit, then enjoy your collections, whether they remind you of a wonderful trip, a beloved relative, an interesting hobby or loved one, just don’t let all your “stuff” take over your life and your home.
We believe that you home should be your refuge—truly a nest—a place to rest and escape the stresses of life. Home is a place where you can completely relax, unwind, and enjoy your own company or that of family and friends. Closet Clutter Control Tips: Organize your clothing by type—all slacks together, then all jackets, shirts, etc. Every time you bring a new piece of clothing home, donate at least one to your favorite charity. A well edited closet makes it easier to get dressed in the morning!
